The Island Spot

The Island Spot

One of my favorite islands to visit in the Caribbean is Jamaica.  I love everything about it – its natural beauty, the people, and of course the food!  I’m all about small dives and street food.  Knowing how near and dear to my heart Caribbean food is, I have to wonder if  The Island Spot is a true escape.

I tried a couple of appetizers first.  The spinach Island Fritters with mango sauce are addictive and soooo good.  Me likey.  Similar to festival bread, the doppers are tasty, slightly sweet fried dough.  You know my feelings on all things fried – you can’t go wrong.

Sadly, my first choice of patties was unavailable so I went with the jerk chicken.  With one bite, I was instantly transported back to Negril.  It’s rubbed with spices and very tender.  Add the jerk sauce and it will make you sweat and possibly breathe fire.  Sounds like a good time, right?  It’s delicious.  The rice and peas are almost identical to what I had in Jamaica.  Yum!

The Island Spot is the cure for Caribbean cravings.  Portions are generous and service is friendly.  They serve a variety of Caribbean favorites like ackee and saltfish, oxtails, and callaloo.  Many of the patrons are from the islands so if they like it, then you know you’re getting the real deal.  They offer $5.99 lunch specials, Sunday brunch, and live music during the week.  Give them a try!
