Recently I had the pleasure of joining the Press Club 0f North Texas for dinner at Jaxx. The company was lively and memorable. However, the real treat was what was on the menu!
For an appetizer, I enjoyed sliced rare ahi tuna, mini crab cakes, shrimp and crispy calamari. With a strong aversion to rare meat, I headed for all the other sea creatures. I’m not a fan of crab cakes, but this one had a nice ratio of crab to stuffing with good flavor. The shrimp was fresh, delicious, and meaty. The best thing was the calamari - it had great crunch and was oh so tender.
Next up was a fresh Greek salad and clam chowder. The chowder was rich, creamy, and generously apportioned with clammy goodness. I can honestly say that it’s one of my favorites!
Then came the main entree of pepper crusted filet mignon with a Cognac demi-glace peppercorn sauce, and sea bass with a lobster Chardonnay sauce, all served with a vegetable medley and Jaxx Twice Baked Potato. The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and so tender that I didn’t need a knife and fork. Oh, to be uncouth and only use my hands. The peppercorn sauce was simply sinful. If ever there was a time for a straw, it was right at that moment. Curse you etiquette!! I thought I had found perfection in that steak, but then with one bite of the sea bass I quickly broke up with the beef. The sea bass was excellent and I could have downed a whole school of them. It was like buttah – smooth and melted in my mouth. Me likey.
Lastly, we came to dessert. I am not really a traditional bread pudding person, but Jaxx’s White Chocolate Bread Pudding in bourbon sauce was good. Also, the Classic Cheesecake was tasty, but since I’m partial to Juniors everything else pales in comparison. Dont’ get me wrong – both desserts will satisfy your sweet tooth and end your meal on a high note.
Jaxx is casual fine dining with personal, attentive service. Reservations are recommended and there’s a great private dining room that can be reserved. Jaxx is pricey, but you can find promos on their website or try them for lunch. If you’re hungry for great steak and seafood, give them a try.
